Yet, parasites are alive and well, thriving in our country and know no economic or class boundary. They can infect anyone, even those who are conscientious of proper hygienic practices.

Parasites range in size from incredibly small microorganisms to being a foot long. Sadly, cases of infestation often go undiagnosed by medical doctors who are not trained in recognizing their symptoms or in detecting them. Also, the irregular patterns of the parasites themselves give rise to undiagnosis.

Many factors have led to the increase of parasites in our country. We have become a more global society. Air transportation has made travel to foreign countries faster and easier. Our “land of the free” has encouraged immigration. Also, much of our produce is grown in other countries, ones with less hygienic practices.

Other factors include:

Drinking contaminated water

Keeping household pets

Eating undercooked meat

Using antibiotics or immunosuppressive drugs

Having multiple sexual partners

It would be advisable for most people, under guidance of a health care professional, to be tested for and undergo a program to eradicate parasites on a periodic basis. Some people benefit from single compounds, such as garlic or black walnut, while some benefit from more comprehensive formulas.

For more research on parasites, read, Guess What Came to Dinner?, by Ann Louise Gittleman

For more information on a parasitic eradication program, e-mail Dr Teri Kelley

Fruity Potpourri

Forget chemically derived or treated potpourri by making your own healthier version:

1 cup dried apples, cubed

4 cinnamon sticks, broken

1 whole nutmeg, broken

2 tablespoons whole allspice

1 cup whole dried cranberries

2 tablespoons whole cloves.

In a plastic lidded container, blend all the ingredients.
