Research suggests that drinking alcohol in moderation can be a great way to get beneficial bioflavanoids and antioxidants, like resveratrol.  Alcohol has even been promoted as a way to improve heart health and ward off dementia.  What is not widely known is that there has never been a study conducted to test the connection between moderate drinking and odds for a longer life.

Alcohol is produced by fermenting the sugar found in the meat of the grape.  Closer investigation shows that the beneficial properties of red wine, for example, are found in the grape seeds and skins.

It is widely known that alcohol is a neurotoxin.  Neurotoxins are elements that poison the brain, leading to cognitive decline and even damage, especially if consumed in heavy amounts.  Changes in brain function occur after the consumption of alcohol as the brain chooses the sugar found in the alcohol rather than the glucose it normally functions on.

Alcohol increases insulin production and plays a major role in the diabetes and obesity epidemics exploding in the United States.  Consumption of alcohol has also been associated with:

  • An increase in the risk of certain types of cancer and stroke
  • A decrease in immune function
  • An increase in estrogen dominance, leading to hormonal imbalance
  • An increase in liver damage

The side effects outweigh the consumption of alcohol, especially since the benefits, like obtaining resveratrol, can be received more bountifully through non-problematic sources like muscadines, raspberries, and mulberries.  Beneficial antioxidants can be gleaned from green tea and acai berries.  Supplements are also available

STONYFIELD FARM® ORGANIC YOGURT

As more people are looking for ways to maintain or increase their body’s supply of beneficial bacteria, they are supplementing with probiotic capsules, eating more naturally fermented foods like sauerkraut, and consuming more yogurt.  Sadly because of processing, most commercially available yogurts are depleted in probiotic properties, but not Stonyfield Farm® plain organic yogurt.  As with any yogurt, make sure the label says that it contains friendly bacteria not just that it is made with friendly bacteria.

Stonyfield Farm® yogurts are popping up in mainstream supermarkets.  You can even get coupons online:  www.stonyfield.com

Oh well, I hadn’t remembered anything about how alcohol would be good for the health. Red wine I guess but other than that, nothing I could remember.
