Garlic: Good for More than Bad Breath

Garlic has made headlines due to its beneficial effects:

  • It’s great for cardiovascular health as it protects against atherosclerosis and reduces blood pressure
  • It’s valuable for immune enhancement as it defends the body against invaders such as viruses and harmful bacteria
  • It’s helpful in removing toxic heavy metals from the body such as mercury and aluminum, which have been linked to learning disabilities and neurological disorders

But garlic has a bad reputation as it is socially unacceptable due to its lingering flavor in the mouth and leaving us with a, well, pungent presence. Its properties may also cause digestive distress, reduce levels of calcium in the bloodstream, and even destroy red blood cells, if taken in vast quantities, which may lead to anemia.

Enter aged garlic extract. When garlic is aged, helpful properties such as S-allylcystein and S-allyl-mercaptocystein are promoted while the pungent properties, which only lead to bad breath and body odor, are naturally dissolved. Aged garlic is also produced without heat and without being crushed. Both of these processes render beneficial elements of little value; however, these are the preferred methods of processing by garlic manufacturers rendering these supplements no better than garlic seasoning but at a much steeper price.

Studies reveal that aged garlic, unlike raw or standard supplemental garlic, has shown no adverse reactions when used with prescription medications, although it would be advisable to receive professional advice and regular monitoring if adding aged garlic. On top of this, taking even large doses of aged garlic has been shown to be non-toxic in clinical studies.
