Bilberry fruit might be better known in the European countries where it is grown. Bilberries are a close cousin to the blueberry though bilberries are slightly more acidic in taste. They have been eaten and enjoyed for their benefits for hundreds of years.
Much of the medicinal research done on bilberries relates to the properties valuable to vision, such as anthocyanosides, used in the treatment and prevention of:
- Cataracts
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Poor night vision
However, bilberries have been found to treat and prevent other disorders. As anthocyanosides found in bilberries help to build collagen, they are great for the connective tissue found in the bones, cartilage, skin, and tendons.
In addition, bilberries are high in resveratrol, a substance also found in red grape skins that helps enhance immunity.
Resveratrol is beneficial to prevent and treat cancer, most predominately prohibiting colon and leukemia cancer cells. Bilberries are also protective against harmful bacterial and viral microorganisms.
A bioflavonoid called quercetin is also found in high quantities in bilberries. Quercetin is known to benefit the cardiovascular system as it helps to regulate blood pressure, prevents the build up of plaque, and helps thin the blood.
Bilberries can be consumed whole as a fruit or in supplement form as an extract. Though they have no known drug interactions, it is best to consult a health practitioner before taking bilberry, especially in supplemental form.
