Since they have been introduced to the market, genetically modified (GM) foods have been met with mixed reviews. Proponents of these foods claim they are more nutritious, that they are perfectly safe for consumers, and that they will help with world hunger. Opponents warn that these claims have not been scientifically proven.
GM foods involve the tampering of a gene in an effort to increase resistance to pesticides and herbicides, like a soybean plant that is classified as being Roundup® (an herbicide) ready. Otherwise lethal doses of Roundup® can be applied to this crop to kill weeds without killing the plant. Common GM crops include:
- Corn
- Crookneck squash
- Hawaiian papaya
- Soybeans
- Zucchini
The problem with GM foods is that these genetic factors are still present when eaten by humans, causing these substances, such as the BT toxin (a pesticide) to be released in the digestive tract. The reaction of the human body to these substances can easily be seen in the farmers working in the industry and the animals feeding on these plants.
GM foods can interfere with the friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. Studies conducted on GM foods fed to animals indicate serious health issues such as:
- Atherosclerosis
- Allergies
- Autoimmunity disorders
- Cancer
- Fertility complications
- Inflammatory bowel disease
You the consumer have the right to know what foods you are eating. The push is on to require the FDA to label GM foods. Voice your concerns at www.centerforfoodsafety.org
STOP MOLDY BERRIES
Berries are nutritional powerhouses, providing high levels of natural antioxidants. But, they seem to mold before you can eat them, seemingly on the way from the grocery store to home. Here’s a natural recipe to prevent moldy berries:
1 part Heinz® distilled white vinegar
10 parts filtered water
Place berries in a bowl and top with mixture. Let soak for a few minutes. Rinse, drain, and dry. Store in refrigerator until you are ready to consume.
NOTE: You can also use a few drops colloidal silver mixed with water.
